RIGHT: A Foreign-Manufactured Blade Reforged into the Central African (Wongo) Style,
Uganda
Forged iron, wood, nail, encrustation
Early 20th century
A product of the Ralph Martindale Group, a British weapons manufacturer, who imported blades into Uganda during the British occupation, between 1888 and 1962. This blade still wears the Ralph Martindale stamp (a crocodile) and "Made in England." However, while the blade was manufactured in England by Martindale, it was in fact reforged by an Ugandan blacksmith in Africa to mimic the traditional Wongo style (it was given a Wongo handle as well). Exceedingly few comparable examples are known to exist.
